Requirements
- OS: Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8. The HP_USB_Disk_Storage_Format_Tool do not work under Windows 10!
- The Laptop-/Mainboard-BIOS must support bootable USB-Sticks - which should apply to most of all modells which are not older than 4-5 years. If an USB-Stick was recognized during the boot process, the BIOS will integrate it as a removable drive, or as a normal drive.
The following tools are needed:
- Ultimate BIOS-Boot-Edition:
- usbdos (folder contains the 3 hidden! MS-DOS system files command.com, io.sys and msdos.sys)
- HP_USB_Disk_Storage_Format_Tool v2.2.3.exe (Hewlett-Packard's Format-Utility for USB-Sticks)
DOWNLOAD Ultimate BIOS-Boot-Edition - 1.2MB - Flashtool - BIOS-Programming-Software (.EXE as file extension), which programs the BIOS file onto the BIOS-Chip, and the BIOS file. Both files must be downloaded:
- Mainboard, bought in its original box: from the mainboard manufacturer website, or
- Notebook or brand PC: from the notebook/brand PC manufacturer website.
Both files must be specially designed for the DOS Operation system! If the manufacturer offers only files for Windows, you have to risk the BIOS update either directly under Windows, or you can re-program your old BIOS-Chip, or purchase a new, programmed BIOS-Chip.
Instruction to create a bootable USB-Stick
- Open the Ultimate BIOS-Boot-Edition and the folder boot_usb_stick.
- Copy the folder usbdos to your hard disk.
- Start the HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool.
- Select your USB-Stick under Device.
- Choose FAT-32 under File system and activate the check mark Create a DOS startup disk.
- Insert the path to your usbdos folder under using DOS system files located at:.
- Press the Start button and wait until the tool has formatted the USB-Stick and has copied the 3 system files.
- Rename the filename of your flashtool and the BIOS file, if they have more than 8 characters (not the file extension!).
- Copy your flashtool and the BIOS file onto the USB-Stick.
The DOS system files are normally invisible, because their file attribute is set to hidden. If you would like to show these hidden files, you have to enable the option: 'Windows-Explorer / Tools / Folder options / View / Show hidden files and folders' and to disable the option 'Hide protected operating system files'.
Starting the BIOS-Update from USB-Stick
- First, go into your BIOS-Setup and change the Bootsequence to USB-Stick/Drive (search for an option like Bootsequence,First Boot Device, or something similarly).
- Insert the USB-Stick and restart your PC. If all went well - MS-DOS starts and you can see the famous DOS-Prompt (C:>).
- Now you can start the BIOS update. Remember: it's a good idea to backup the old BIOS version.

Happy flashing!

KileM 27.Jan.2017 16:39Dear Forum members, I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro L300-EZ1521 Part Number PSLB9U-047011 which had is stuck at Toshiba logo. I took out the HDD and attached to another laptop [as an xternal Drive] as a way of testing it. The HDD looks fine as i can view, edit, copy and play music file. I have tried all combinations of keys F2, F12, FN + F, C + Power, 0 + Power with no success. The only keys that seems to work are CTRL + ALT + DEL as it restarts the laptop and CAPS LOCK, FN keys. Could this be a Bios issue. Can this be resolved by BIOS Update/Flash/ Repair?. Your assistance is highly appreciated. Regards, KileM

Try UNetbootin to create a bootable Live USB drive with FreeDOS, or use another USB pendrive.

M.Collins 16.Feb.2016 00:27So very close .. followed simple instructions, booted stick into dos, 'PHLASH16 6912.ROM' (Phoenix dos tool).... Utility ran nicely, but stalled on error 'cannot flash with memory managers loaded, HIMEM'. Don't know how to disable HIMEM, any suggestions?

@zack
Because the mainboard manufacturer provides these files in a special version for your mainboard model, and i'm no wizard.

Why didn't you just provide a flash tool?

Use another USB or PS/2 keyboard, or another USB 2.0 (not 3.0!) port.

Video Tutorial: How To Flash BIOS with an ASUS Board
Setup & Necessary Tools
- A board with simplified firmware flashing software.
- USB storage device.
- The most recent version of your board's BIOS, found from the manufacturer's site. Store this on the USB device.
Warnings & Notes
Abrupt power loss or power disruption by the user can brick the board -- meaning it will be as useful as a brick when it comes to computing. Do not disconnect power at any time during this process. Don't perform during electrical storms.
When updating via internet, most boards will store the update locally, wipe the old firmware, and then apply the update. In the event your board does not do this, but instead requires a constant internet connection, it is advisable not to disconnect your wire during the update. We would also advise opting for a wired connection.
Also note that flashing BIOS will wipe all settings, so it is recommended that you write down any overclocking settings before proceeding.
Note that many high-end boards -- like MSI's Z97-GD65 -- offer a 'dual-BIOS' feature. This is a good thing. The reason that flashing firmware can brick a board is because there exist no consumer means to recover a corrupted firmware chip. To update firmware, the board must first wipe the existing blocks housing the firmware, then apply the update block-by-block to the flash device. Failure or power loss during the 'wipe' phase will likely result in catastrophic failure -- or unrecoverable corruption to the Flash memory.
Dual BIOS eliminates this concern. If BIOS fails due to a bad flash, a physical switch on the board can be toggled to enable the backup BIOS chip.
For most users, it is recommended that you don't fix something that isn't broken, to paraphrase an adage. Updating BIOS is advisable in the instance of new features (like support for new CPUs and unlocking CPUs) or fixed features (often, this is RAID).
Step-by-Step Guide to Updating BIOS on an ASUS Motherboard
- Boot to BIOS. Navigate to 'Tool,' then 'EZ Flash.'
- Check your current BIOS version. Make a note.
- Download the most recent BIOS iteration from the ASUS website. Store this to a USB device.
- Boot to BIOS. Navigate to 'Tool,' then 'EZ Flash.'
- Select the USB device. Select the file. Press 'enter.'
- You will be prompted one final time before applying the update. Review this and accept.
- Reboot upon completion.
- Check the BIOS version again to ensure the update was applied.
- You will need to re-apply BIOS settings manually.
That's it! You're done. We've got similar content coming for updating via internet when using MSI and ASRock boards. Subscribe to the YouTube channel for more tutorials, as always.
